Say What??? SEO Key Terms for Beginners

Must-know SEO buzzwords for businesses!

With the rise of internet marketing, many businesses have been battling MNCs - Multinational Corporations - for recognition. And it looks like their time may finally be at hand!

After years spent struggling, things are changing rapidly with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google has announced that ranking factors, including content and links from authoritative sources, are going into its algorithm, which decides what shows up first when someone does an online search.

SEO has lasting benefits that can transform a business’s bottom line. However, SEO requires an understanding of the jargon.

If you’re having trouble understanding SEO Terms, we have a list for you. We compiled the top SEO Terms for Beginners so you can get started on your digital marketing journey.

11 SEO Key Terms for Beginners

The process by which Google and other major players in this industry “crawl” through your site is called crawling; it's how they find content for their algorithms so that people can easily access what matters most- information about specific queries or topics.

Indexing is storing web pages in a database so that users can find them on search engines. It’s a way for users to find all the web pages that have been crawled. The indexer stores these files and then makes them available through searches on Google.

Crawlers or Spiders

Crawlers or spiders are bots or programs that crawl your web pages. They suggest what information should be added to a search engine’s index.

Caffeine is the indexing system that Google uses to index new web pages and store information collected through the crawling process.

Search Intent

Search intent, or user intent, describes the purpose of an online search. What you're looking for when you search online is search intent.

Featured Snippets

Have you noticed that some search results show an answer box at the top? They have featured snippets, also known as rich results. These short text snippets quickly answer a searcher's query. Its content is extracted from web search listings.

Long-Tail Keywords

You know about keywords, which are included in title tags, headers, and content body on a page to improve its search engine ranking. Long-tail keywords are conversation-focused, combining three or more keywords and giving more specific intent.

For example, instead of ‘shoes,’ ‘best running shoes can be more valuable to the readers.

Keyword Density

You must have heard marketers talking about not overstuffing keywords. Well then, how to know the right amount of keywords? Via keyword density!

Keyword density is the number of times a keyword appears on a webpage compared to the total words on the page. Divide the keyword number by the total number of words, and multiply it by 100 to get a percentage.

Backlinks, also known as inbound or Incoming links, connect one website to another. Search engines consider backlinks as votes for a specific page, so the more backlinks, the higher the organic search engine rankings.

Black Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO is web marketing often involving spam posts and backlinks, damaging your site's reputation. The practice has been mutually discouraged by search engines like Google because it disrupts their regular practices.

Examples - keyword stuffing, sneaky redirects, cloaking, paid links, etc.

White Hat SEO

White hat SEO is rank-boosting SEO strategies in line with the terms and conditions of search engines—no point in guessing that you are encouraged to use them.

Examples - rich content, fast site loading, responsive design, keyword-rich meta tags, etc.

Developing a deep understanding of SEO is a long journey, but you must start somewhere. We hope this SEO key terms list helped you.
