How does Amazon SES work?

SES is a pay-as-you-go service, which means you only pay for what you use. There are no long-term contracts or minimum fees. You can start sending emails using Amazon SES for free. All you need is an AWS account and to verify your identity (which requires a small amount of personal information). Once your identity is verified, you can start sending emails.

To send an email using Amazon SES, you simply need to provide the following:

  • The email address or addresses of the recipients
  • The message subject
  • The message body
  • You can also specify additional parameters such as:
  • The sender's email address
  • A "Reply-To" email address
  • CC and BCC addresses
  • Confirmation emails (also called "bounce" messages)
  • Attachments

Amazon SES will then take care of the rest, including:

  • Formatting the email correctly
  • Checking that the sender's address is valid
  • Ensuring that there are enough credits to send the email
  • Delivering the email to the recipient's mailbox.

If you are using Amazon SES to send transactional emails on behalf of your customers (for example, password reset emails or order confirmation messages), you will need to configure your Amazon SES settings and request production access.

Requesting production access is a simple process that just requires you to fill out a short form. Once you have been granted production access, you can start sending up to 50,000 messages per day.
